Workshop: Fundamentals of Sign Language for Communication with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Individuals

Under the patronage of

Prof. Dr. Sherif Kamel Shahin – Dean of the College of Special Education;
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Omar El-Sayed Hamada – Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development

The College of Special Education organized a training workshop titled “Fundamentals of Sign Language for Communication with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Individuals”, held on Monday, October 20, 2025.

The workshop was attended by faculty members and teaching assistants from several colleges across the university, reflecting the institution’s commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and joint work. Representatives from the following colleges participated:

  • Nursing
  • Applied Health Sciences Technology
  • Physical Therapy
  • Oral and Dental Surgery
  • Engineering
  • Pharmaceutical Sciences and Drug Manufacturing

The workshop covered an introduction to sign language and its importance, training on the basics of communication with deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, as well as learning a set of daily signs and essential vocabulary that support practical communication within educational and community institutions.

The workshop achieved several key outcomes, including:

  • Enabling participants to acquire the fundamentals of sign language.
  • Raising awareness about the importance of communicating with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Enhancing collaboration among university colleges to serve the community and support individuals with special needs.
  • A high level of participant engagement, reflecting the success of the workshop in achieving its educational and training goals.
